Nestled into the Umpqua Forest, Eugene, Oregon is a very busy college town that bustles about 24/7. A very rainy urban oasis in the middle of dense green forest. Within this town, among the unsuspecting human race, live vampires, just like anywhere else in the world. Currently staying on the Northern outskirts are a coven of governing vampires dedicated to the keeping of the Code. The Code is the vampire law that all vampires must abide. Of course, there are delinquents.
Live as a vampire or human in the world of Ashen Nights. Abide by the Code or break it and face the consequences. Create your own coven or your own empire... For the vampire, the whole world is a playground.
Updates June 28th Zo will be gone until July 7 and today is gypsydancer's 18th birthday. Happy Birthday!
June 24th The Dannati Coven has finally formed. I'm working on the little things... but it's official.
Playing with fire [open] « Thread Started on Jul 1, 2008, 12:34pm »
Arsine sat, her back up against a tombstone and her knees almost to her chest. Dark sunglasses covered her brown eyes. The sun was shining, it was what most humans would call a beautiful day. She held something silver in a hand that was propped up on one of her knees. A small flame appeared for a brief moment, and then as Arsine removed her thumb from the trigger that created it, the flame disappeared. Not a minute later, and the flame was back due to the pressure on the trigger. Again, she lifted her thumb and the flame disappeared. This happened several times, and though it wasn't obvious due to the darkness of the sunglasses, Arsine was staring at it intently.
Her jeans were dark, almost black, and she was wearing a black t-shirt. The clothes contrasted with her pale skin; she liked that. She loved how pale "death" had made her skin. She often referred to her transformation as death, because in a sense, that's what it had been. Sure, she was still existing, but her heart didn't beat and she only needed to breathe in order to talk. She was no longer human, and that suited her just fine.
She looked up from her lighter for a moment to see if anyone was around. There were a few people, she didn't bother getting up, this was a pretty old grave and she was almost positive no one would care to visit it. She went back to playing with her flame until she heard something from behind her.

"If the rumours about us were true, you'd be a towering inferno by now," he was, of course, referring to the whole 'Vampires are extremely flammable' myth.. Or what he thought was a myth anyway, he had personally never set himself on fire to see if it were true or not. Nicolas tilted his head to the side as he too watched the flame flickering brightly even in the open daylight, but quickly enough he lost interest and turned his concentration back to Arsine. It's not often that he comes across a Vampire in the day time, sure he knows they walk around beneath the sun just as he does. But most of them are never alone, nor in an open and public area. Vampire politics can't reign in public. Outing themselves to mortals was a death sentence.
Plus, if she had any problem with him he was not going to argue/fight over a grave. How declassé was that?
A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, "spending time in a graveyard.. Not too morbid.. Playing with fire? You've got a gothic vibe pratically radiating from your delicious form." Nicolas himself was wearing a pale pair of faded jeans and a white tshirt with some fancy black swirled design on front. He didn't know where the tshirt had come from but he'd thrown it on anyway, it's not as if human's opinions really mean anything to him. It's much like humans not caring what cows think of them.. In the end they're just going to eat them anyway..
"Oh," he stuck out his hand, a quick movement that he never meant to come across as intimidating nor threatening, he was offering his hand to shake, "I'm Nicolas, you're?"

Arsine looked up from her lighter, still playing with it, just not looking at it. Now her attention was directed at the vampire standing in front of her. “I’ve learned to be careful,” she said, her voice was low; she didn’t really want to draw attention to the fact that there was that little thing about burning that vampires were associated with. She looked back at the lighter, the flame now lit, and removed her thumb. She held the fire maker in her hand and let it cool shortly before sticking it in her pocket; she had been messing with the little device for a while, and it had gotten warm. If the rumors were true, she didn’t want her pants to burn off of her body.
She smiled slightly at his comment about the “gothic vibe pratically radiating from [her] delicious form.” She took it as a compliment, though she wasn’t sure that it was meant that way. “Or maybe I have some sort of unconscious death wish, but thanks,” she said.
She took his hand when he offered it to her and shook it politely. “Kaytlyn,” she said, “But most people call me Arsine.” She released his hand and stood up, only to prop herself up on the old grave that she had been sitting up against. Luckily, for her, it was a rather tall tombstone, well, tall enough that her short body would be able to lean up against it while standing. “It’s nice to meet you Nicolas.” Her voice was louder than it was before, a normal tone, she assumed they were past the vampire talk, but even if they weren’t, she assumed now that no one was really listening, or even cared about two random people talking near a grave. Almost everyone, she assumed, was mourning the death of a lost loved one. Why else would anyone want to come to a cemetery? Boredom Arsine, boredom is the other reason. It’s why you’re here, she thought rather sarcastically.
She touched her pocket to make sure the little lighter was still there. As if it would go anywhere else, and looked back up at Nicolas. “So what brings you out here?”

What brings you out here?
The question never caught him off guard, without missing a beat he replied, "crawling out of my grave to speak to you of course." He was far too cheerful for the time of day that it was, but the more lively tone to his skin gave away the fact that he had fed recently. His eyes were brighter than usual, his form pratically buzzing as fresh blood coursed through his veins. If she could see that then the answer to her question was answered, he had fed, he had got rid of the evidence cleanly enough. He'd lied, well, joked to try to get off of the subject, she may have been one of those vegetarian vampires. Nicolas was a member of the Dannati Coven and proud of it.
"A deathwish," he repeated with a smile, crouching down, enough that his hands could idly pluck at the grass between his feet, "that's a bit of a strange thing to say, we're already, technically, dead. Don't think we'll go up in flames anyway," he added, watching as the flame was extinguished for the last time. Fire was beautiful in it's own way, a deadly flicker of light beckoning you forwards. Luring you into it's burning embrace, "unless we douse ourselves in petrol first."
"Pleasure to meet you to," he replied with a more friendlier smile, let it be said that he hasn't forgot his manners. His British accent made the words seem proper, something that he usually can't usually pull off when he's speaking. Being away from his sire had caused his own personality to start to develop, more of an individual than his 'puppet master' would like.. "You can call me Nic if you like, it's quicker to say.. Only one syllable."

Arsine stared at the male vampire for a minute. She couldn’t help it. There was something strange about him. Or maybe she just wasn’t used to being around happy vampires. It was obvious to her now why he was there. “Well, I feel special then,” she said, playing along with his little joke. She leaned off of the tombstone, showing just how short she really was, and put her hand in her pocket, the same pocket that had the lighter in it. She smiled softly, not at him, but at the thought of someone actually popping up out of the ground to see her. It wasn’t likely, and sounded more like something that would happen in a cheesy horror movie, though she hadn’t watched many for the simple fact that life as a vampire was enough horror for her. She took her hand out of her pocket, though now it just hung there with nothing to do while the other rested on her hip, not in an annoying I’m-angry way, but in a casual, relaxed sort of way. She quickly came to the conclusion that, since this vampire was in a graveyard, and didn’t look thirsty, he preferred human blood to an animal’s. She didn’t dwell on that thought for long. It neither bothered nor impressed her. He could drink from anything he wanted as far as she was concerned, which wasn’t very.
“We may not be able to breathe,” she said in regards to his comment about using the word deathwish. “We exist don’t we? Whether we want to or not, people see us, they know we’re here, even if they don’t know what we are.” She continued to smile, though she didn’t quite have the same enthusiasm of a just-fed-vampire that this one did. She looked pleasant enough. “But if you like, I can light you on fire and see if it’s true,” she added in response to his comment on not going up in flames.
“Nic then,” she said. “It’s nice to meet you too.” She was sincere about it, which surprised even herself. She hadn’t met many vampires here yet. “So, Nic, when you’re not popping out of graves, what do you do to waste time around here?” she asked and began walking, in the opposite direction of most of the humans so if the subject were to turn back to them, they wouldn’t be heard. She watched him to see if he was walking with her.

"I said we were dead," he pointed out helpfully, a smile once again alighting his lips, "not that we didn't exist. If i thought that i would be doing something drastic in order for people to really notice me, you know, making an indication and a rebellious act that would make them have to admit i existed.." He paused for a moment, a frown creasing his brow as he adopted a thoughtful expression, "Though what i'd do i'm not entirely sure.."
He shrugged the thought away returning his attention back to Arsine with the same soft smile upon his lips, "I don't particularly want to be set on fire, thanks. Becoming a towering inferno was never one of my life ambitions.. But if it does manage to work it's way onto my to do list, i'll be sure to look you up," he probably would as well, that was the sad thing. Though, he doubted he would ever want to set himself on fire. Sure he loved the heat that rushed through his veins after a feed but he hates being too hot, it makes him cranky.
"Absolutely nothing what so ever," he sighed, actually, for the first time during the conversation, sounding slightly bitter, "life can be boring when you don't have somebody to spend it with, i'm looking for some mortal to brighten my days up a little," he paused to crack a smile once more, "don't you find them amusing? What do you do in your spare time?"

Arsine looked down at the ground. "I suppose you’re right," she said softly. "We could exist and not be alive. A walking corpse I guess. That’s what you would call us." She really didn’t know if what she was saying made any sense, but it didn’t really matter, she was thinking this out loud for the most part. She put her hands behind her back and laced her pale fingers.
She looked up at Nic, who had made it clear he did not wish to become one with the fire. "Well, there goes my idea for entertainment," she joked. "Make sure you do let me know though, if it makes its way onto your list. It could be fun. Maybe we’ll make a day of it. Out ourselves to the world." It was all just useless talk. She had no intention of letting the humans know about them, dying again wasn’t on her list of things to do.
"Nothing to do huh…" Arsine’s voice trailed off, disappointed. She noted the bitterness in his tone and looked up at Nic, tilting her head slightly. "Yes, amusing I guess is as good a word as any for them," she said in response to the whole human issue. "I find being around them interesting. They think they’re so smart, but have no idea what we are. They feel no danger around us, it’s… amusing, as you put it. Though I wouldn’t want to spend eternity with one."
She thought for a minute about how to answer the question of spare time. "Well, usually, I travel," she said. "But I’m getting bored with that. Fire, is always entertaining for some reason, but it’s not something I want to do twenty-four hours a day. So I’ve been coming here for a while; listening to the humans discuss the afterlife and talk to the dead." She glanced around at the humans in the distance. Their tears were pointless in her mind.
"Yes, interesting…" she whispered. "What do you find particularly amusing about them?" She asked, her gaze focused on a certain group. Three humans gathered around a new grave. One of them arranging flowers. For a brief moment, she wished she felt sorry for them.
